Pre/Post Conceived notions about this class.

Please write a single page, minimum three paragraphs - five to seven sentences per paragraph. The paper should discuss your pre-conceived notions about this class and where you stand now. You should include whether or not you thought needed this class or not. In essence, do you feel like this class was a benefit or a waste of time.

You do not have to create a blog account, but please make sure that you put your name on your posting (particularly if you post anonymous). I would like to see your assignments posted by Thursday, July 24th. I will deduct 5 points for every day thereafter that you have not posted. I will give 25 bonus points to those of you that take the time to create your own blog and an additional 25 bonus points if you figure out how to link your blog to mine. Total possible points 150 (I'll let you apply the bonus points to whatever part of your grade you would like!!!)If you want to see what a linked blog looks like, check out May's comment section. There are several linked sites at the bottom of the posting.

I think that this class was helpful but i think that the class needs a longer learning period other than 4 classes.

The class had so much information to offer but in so little time. Also some of the assignments that were given was explain in the book but difficult to understand when it came time to actually do the assignment hands on.

A lot of the of the material was very new to me and i had not done any of the things before..but i needed more training in order for me to be able to remember the material for future use.

Also i really enjoyed taking the computer apart and putting it back together. That was an experience that i probally would never forget. But over all the class was very helpful to aleast get me started when i do go out in the field and have to work with a computer.

Prior to attending the Data Systems class, I had several preconceived notions. My occupation does not require the daily use of computers. My lack of computer skills and knowledge posed a feeling of inadequacy. Peering into the Data Systems class prior to attending, students appeared to be engrossed in intense computer activity. After probing several students as to the activities of the class, I avoided taking the class. Several students mentioned PowerPoint, Excel and creating Blogs. I was under the impression the class required extensive computer knowledge. I was interested in learning PowerPoint and Excel however, I had no knowledge of what a Blog was. After registering for the class, I anticipated a challenge and hard work.

During the initial class, the professor assured me that the class would benefit all students academically and professionally. After the first reading assignment, I learned computer "jargon", the names of computer parts, names of different types of computers, how to assemble and disassemble a computer, and was introduced to Windows 2003! Learning to navigate through Windows 2003 was gratifying. I am able to use concepts learned n class academically and professionally.

Students enrolled in Springfield College School of Human Services are required to complete a computer course. I had to register for the required course. The most valuable lesson learned was...task presented in academic and professional careers do not always entail instructions. I will have to figure out how to complete tasks on my own.

I knew that I needed this class in order to keep up with the world. I feel that I learned a great deal and that the class has been worthwhile. Not only was it educational, but we also had fun. Being able to work in excel, was by far the most challenging for me and even in my down time I continue to try hard at getting it done correctly.

I had hoped that we would get more hands on, or wished that we would have more hands on and more time spent in the classroom, however I do feel that what I have learned thus far will take me farther when it comes to computers and computer language. The powerpoint is an excellent tool and I know that I will use it frequently in many areas of my careeer.

I especially enjoyed the first days of class when we worked as teams and were able to see the inside of the computer, something that I did not expect. That was also a learning experience. There are so many people that do not have the opportunity to see what really makes a computer tick, and so I was really excited to have that connection made.

Overall if given the chance to enroll in more computer courses, because of what I have had the opportunity to learn in this class I would enroll. I will continue to use my book as a reference since it makes the exercises easy.

By you giving us assignments to figure out on our own was not always welcomed, however as you said, a lot of life is by trial and error. Not in those words, but I feel that is what you meant and I like that. I would like to take the class again and have more time to get more accomplished.

I originally took this class to learn more about the Microsoft Office Programs. I use Word and Excel on a regular basis but I only use PowerPoint occasionally. I felt I knew Word and Excel well, but was confident I would learn something new. I hoped to become more proficient at using PowerPoint. The one thing I hoped this class would not be is just a review.
When the class began, I was relieved to learn we would not be learning out of the book. Professor Howard has a unique teaching style that engages and challenges the students. We immediately started learning with a hands-on approach by disassembling and reassembling a computer. The students learned the material in the book by reading the text and doing the exercises. The class time was used to review what we learned and to learn applications that were not covered by the book. These applications are very useful.
I learned much more in this class than I thought I would. I now can use mail merge and create flyers and newsletters that I did not know how to do before. I also learned how to link data between sheets in Excel. I also realized that there is a lot more to learn about Word and Excel. I think everyone should take this class, but do so during the first year of school.

I believe that the class was very imformative.i also believe that there was much more time needed in the class for me.

I will admit that when i first saw this class on my schedule i was a little nervous, because i know very little about computers. When i read the syllabus i became extremly nervous because it seemed like so much work.

Now that i have takin the class i feel alittle more confident in working on computers, i dont feel as challenged as before.
The assignments were very challenging but imanaged to get through most of them.

I beleive the class was helpful especially since I was not very familiar with a lot of the different software programs (publisher, excel, powerpoint, etc..)

The class should be mandatory for all students just entering the College because, the powerpoint presentation you need for a lot of the classes within the College.

I just think the syllabus needs to be more informative, and descriptive as to the expectations and requirements of the class.

My pre-notion was I thought it was more of a technical class, pretty much like the first class that we took the computer apart.

My post-notions is I'm not as intimated with the software as in past times. I learned a lot and plan on using a lot of the learnings now. Especially, excel, and powerpoint.
